Reggae Music and Sound

Does listening to reggae give you a mystical high?  Perhaps you love the deep, rolling bass that seems to resonate with your spirit. Or that odd guitar skank—laid back yet still moving the rhythm ahead. After that, there is the hypnotic and steady groove, which akin to coconut palms swaying in an inviting tropical breeze.

Reggae is felt, rather than merely heard. From smoky jam sessions in the backstreets of Kingston to sizable festival audiences enthralled with the beat, reggae has a way of attracting listeners from all walks of life. It’s a music built on emotion, space, and groove, where what you don’t play is just as important as what you do.

In the articles I have grouped below, I analyze the elements that build the reggae sound. I detail how to recreate the essence of reggae. We look at the production methods that give it warmth, the tempo-defying drum patterns, the basslines that transport the melody. We look at how reggae has, and still is, influencing new musical gendres.I research live sound reproduction, mixing, and mastering.

Whether you’re a musician looking to master the one-drop rhythm or just want to understand what makes reggae so addictive, you’re sure to find the answers here.
